LYBOTICS brought together girls with a shared interest in science, technology and robotics for the second edition of its all-girls robotics tournament in Tajoura, creating a dedicated space for young participants to learn, compete and demonstrate what they can build.
The tournament formed part of LYBOTICS community teams ongoing work to expand opportunities for girls and young women in STEM.
Throughout the programme, participants worked in teams to apply their robotics skills in a practical competitive environment. They designed, built and programmed robots, tested different solutions, responded to technical challenges and worked together under pressure.
But the tournament was about more than robots.
For LYBOTICS, robotics is a tool for developing skills that extend far beyond engineering and programming. Working as part of a team gives young people opportunities to communicate their ideas, make decisions, solve problems, take responsibility and develop confidence in their own abilities.
The all-girls format provided participants with an environment where they could take ownership of every part of the robotics process from technical work and programming to teamwork and leadership.
From Participation to Leadership
One of the most encouraging outcomes has been seeing girls become increasingly comfortable taking active roles within their teams.
Instead of simply being introduced to technology, participants are encouraged to experiment, make mistakes, find solutions and explain their work. These experiences help transform STEM from something students observe in a classroom into something they can actively create.
The tournament also reflects a wider goal within LYBOTICS: creating pathways that allow participants to progress from learners to competitors, team leaders, volunteers and eventually mentors for the next generation.
Holding the tournament for a second consecutive year is an important step toward making these opportunities sustainable rather than one-off experiences.
Creating More Opportunities for Girls in STEM
Across Libya, many young people still have limited access to practical robotics equipment, specialised mentors and hands-on STEM learning opportunities.
LYBOTICS continues to address this gap through robotics teams, competitions, workshops, mentoring and community-based programmes that give students the opportunity to learn by doing.
The Tajoura all-girls tournament demonstrates what can happen when girls are provided with the tools, encouragement and space to explore technology confidently.
As LYBOTICS continues expanding its programmes across Libya, we look forward to seeing more girls not only participating in STEM, but building, innovating, competing and leading within it.
